NINDS T32 Institutional Training Grant “Training in Research in Neurology”

Renewed July 1, 2011- June 30, 2016

Training objectives: Our primary goal is to train the next generation of scientists and clinician-scientists for successful careers in translational research in neurology.  Mentored independent research will be the primary feature of this training program.  With appropriate guidance trainees will be required to design and carry out a logical sequence of experiments to address a substantive neuroscientific question.  They will be encouraged to present and publish findings related to this field, to apply for grants, and become proficient enough to teach others.  They will also have a chance to shadow Emory neurologists in clinic.

Our mentors are all well-respected and published scientists in their field of translational research in Neurology.  They oversee and guide trainee research and provide opportunities and lines of communication with other neuroscience related laboratories throughout the university.  Our mentors keep up-to-date with the latest research in their field and share this information with their trainees.  They encourage them to produce publishable results and obtain grant funding.

Predoctoral trainees are eligible for support after their second year after successfully completing their qualifying exams and all required laboratory rotations and have selected their focused dissertation project relevant to translational neurology.   They are required to submit a supporting letter from their thesis advisor; prior research experience with documenting publications or letters; stated interest in translational research in neurology; letters of recommendation from reigning faculty and transcripts and rotation evaluations.

Postdoc candidates were required to submit a formal letter of application outlining their education, qualifications and training goals; stated interest in translational research in neurology; a CV and 3 letters of recommendation, including one from the applicant’s PhD advisor or residency director.

Applications are due May 1 of each year for consideration for funding that year.
